- National Park Service on Instagram: "¡°Oh, barnacles!¡± - Squidward Well, that¡¯s a bit unsettling. The pelagic gooseneck barnacle is a unique creature that can be found living on driftwood, ships, or flotsam and jetsam (various marine debris, not a pair of moray eels that serve as minions to Ursula, the sea witch), and is sometimes seen when those objects wash onshore. How do barnacles stick to pretty much anything they encounter? They secrete a fast-curing cement that is among the most powerful natural glues known. What¡¯s for dinner? It¡¯s not Krabby Patties. At least not on Thursdays. Barnacles feed by combing the water for microscopic organisms through feather-like appendages called cirri. As seen in this video, the cirri rapidly extend and retract through the opening at the top of the barnacle. Neat. They quickly withdraw into their protective shells if they sense a potential threat or when trying to avoid neighbors who happen to be a sponge or starfish. : NPS Video/Matt Lau @pointreyesnps #PointReyesNPS #barnacles #oceanlife #nature #sealife #nationalparks"
