처절한 기다림 끝에 이 땅에도 해방이 찾아왔다.
그리고 해방의 감격과 함께 일본군도 퇴각했다.
이때 평양 시민들 앞에 처음으로 모습을 드러낸 이가 있었으니 그가 바로 다름 아닌 김일성이었다.
해방의 감격이 채 가시지 않은 45년 10월, 그는 소련 군정이 주최한 평양시민 환영대회에 나와 대중연설을 함으로써 일반에 첫선을 보였다.

Nevertheless, the reason why the crowd expected Roh was due to the fact that the independence activists such as Cho Man-sik and Kim Gu were in their 60s.
당시 김일성의 나이는 서른셋이었다.
전설적인 김일성 장군을 환영하러 나왔던 군중들은 당혹할 수밖에 없었다.
문제는 김일성, 그가 군중들의 기대와 달리 너무 젊다는데 있었다.
극작가 오영진은 당시 평양 군중대회 분위기를 이렇게 적고 있다.
"해방 후 최초의 대규모 군중대회가 노전사 김일성 장군을 환영하기 위해 열렸는데, 노장군 대신 젊은 청년이 나타나자 군중들 사이에 가짜라는 공감대가 전류처럼 확산했다"라는 것이다.
혹 군중 앞에 나타난 김일성이 아닌 신출귀몰한 노장군이 따로 있었던 것은 아닐까?
당시 유격대 활동을 했던 만주의 상황을 고려하면 노장군은 당시 신화일 뿐이라고 말한다.
그럼에도 군중들이 노장군을 기대했던 데에는 당시 조만식, 김구 등 독립운동가들의 나이가 60대였다는 것도 원인이 있어 보인다.

항일 명장이라고 하기엔 너무 젊었던 김일성...
백범 김구의 비서를 지냈던 선우진은 그러나 다른 김일성 장군이 존재했을 가능성에 대해서는 인정하지 않았다.
등장 이후 남한에서 맹위를 떨친 김일성 가짜설의 진원지도 이 노장군 신화였다.
문헌상 가장 먼저 김일성 가짜 설을 들고 나온 해방 전후의 조선 진상은 만 33세에 평양에 나타난 김일성은 소련 사관학교 출신의 소련군 소좌라고 적고 있다.
그리고 실제 김일성은 1920년대 국내에 널리 알려졌던 일본 육사 출신의 전설적 항일 명장 김광서 장군이며 북한의 김일성은 그의 이름을 도용했다는 것이다.
이런 주장은 이후에도 계속 이어지는데 일본 육사 출신의 김광서, 김경천이라는 가명을 썼던 장군이 진짜 김일성 장군이었을까?

북한은 김일성의 항일투쟁 중에서도 특히 1937년에 있었던 보천보전투를 대대적으로 선전해 왔다.
장백에서 활동하던 김일성 부대가 국내로 진공, 일제 관공서를 습격했다는 것인데, 그러나 김일성 가짜 설을 주장하는 이들은 보천보전투의 김일성 역시 북한의 김일성이 아니라고 주장한다.
당시 국내 언론들은 이 보천보 사건에 대해 지대한 관심을 보였다.
동아일보는 이튿날 호외를 내는 것을 필두로 사건 속보를 전했다.
이어서 조선일보 역시 피해 상황을 상세히 보도했다.
보천보는 혜산진 근처의 면 소재지였는데 당시 중국과 국경을 맞대고 있는 혜산 일대에는 만주에서 활동하는 항일 빨치산과 독립군들의 출현이 그만큼 빈번했다고 한다.
그래서 일제의 감시 또한 삼엄했는데 서슬 퍼렀던 일제의 시설들이 쑥대밭이 되는 사건이 벌어졌던 것이다.
보천보 사건 당시 일곱 살이었다는 강순명씨는 부근 마을에서 살았다고 하는데 그날 밤의 상황을 아직도 생생하게 기억하고 있었다.

The Bocheonbo incident is a decisive opportunity for Kim Il-sung, who was active in Manchuria, to be known in Korea. However, his name, which had been haunting on the basis of his albino since then, was rising and falling on the ground.
당시 보도에 따르면 보천보를 습격한 이들은 주재소와 면사무소, 우체국 등에 불을 질렀고 부락은 순식간에 잿더미가 됐다고 한다.
당시 신문에는 새까맣게 타버린 마을 곳곳을 담은 여러 장의 사진들이 실리기도 했다.
인명피해는 크지 않았으나 그것은 승승장구하던 일본군에게 일격을 가한 것이었다.
자존심에 상처를 입은 일제는 혜산 등 인근 세 개 경찰서에 총동원령을 내린다.
그리고 김일성 부대를 국경 밖까지 맹렬히 추격해 가는데 그 과정에서 일경 일곱 명이 사망하고 여섯 명이 부상을 입었다고 한다.
당시 신문에는 보천보를 습격한 무리들이 김일성 일파로 판명됐다는 기사를 실었다.
보천보 사건은 만주에서 활동하던 김일성이 국내에 알려지는 결정적 계기가 된다.
하지만 그 이전부터 장백을 근거로 출몰했던 그의 이름은 지면에 오르내리고 있었다.

특히 그 무렵 국내에서 발행되던 '삼천리'라는 잡지는 여러 차례에 걸쳐 김일성과 관련한 특집 기사들을 흥미 있게 다루고 있다.
그러나 당시 언론들은 일제하였기 때문에 항일 빨치산 활동을 하던 그를 비적이라는 말로 표현했다.
북한의 김일성이 보천보 전투의 김일성이 아니라는 가짜 설은 보천보 당시 서른여섯 살이라는 김일성이 그해 사망했다는 보도와 관련 있다.
극비문서인 일본 외무성 자료에도 비슷한 내용이 수록되어 있다.
이것은 일제의 정보보고에 해당하는 문건인데 당시 보천보를 습격했던 김일성이 그해 11월 무송현에서 만주군에 의해 사살됐을 것이라는 보고가 있었음을 알 수 있다.

보천보 전투를 지휘했다는 북의 김일성...
정보 보고대로 김일성이 정말로 사망했다면 해방 이후 나타난 김일성은 가짜라는 이야기가 되는데, 해방 후 발간된 만주국군은 김일성을 사살했다 해서 포상까지 했으나 그가 다시 출몰했다고 적고 있다.
이는 당시 정보보고가 잘못됐음을 보여주는 것이었다.
보천보 습격 이후 이번에는 김일성과 연계했던 혜산 일대의 국내 조직에 대한 대대적 검거에 나서게 된다. 그런데 이 혜산 사건의 판결문은 보천보를 습격했던 김일성이 북한의 김일성임을 단적으로 보여준다.
북한 김일성의 본명은 김성주(金成柱)였다.
판결문에 기재된 김성주의 한자와 일치한다.

그리고 조선총독부 관원 자료를 봐도 당시 김일성의 출생지와 북한 김일성의 출생지가 일치하는 것으로 확인됐다.
이에 대해서는 해방 후 김일성의 숙정을 피해 망명길에 올랐던 이들조차 이의가 없는듯하다.
지난 1989년 한국을 방문했던 이상조씨는 인민군 부참모장을 지냈던 사람으로 보천보의 김일성이 북의 김일성임을 인정했다.
그런데도 남에서는 분단 이후 김일성 가짜설이 정설처럼 받아들여졌고 이러저러한 가짜설을 집대성한 이가 김일성 열전을 낸 이명영이다.
그는 70~80년대 당시 만주 등지에서 활동했던 증언자들의 진술을 토대로 4인의 김일성 설을 들고 나온다

첫 번째는 일본 육사 출신의 김광서(金光瑞), 두 번째는 보천보 전투를 지휘하고 그해 사망한 김일성, 세 번째는 그의 사망 후 부임한 후임자 김일성, 네 번째가 바로 해방 후 평양에 나타난 북의 김일성이라는 것인데 근거 없는 이런 김일성 가짜설은 어디서 연유됐던 것일까?
김일성 가짜 설은 해방 이후 그와 관련된 책을 낸 저자들의 과거 경력과 무관하지 않았다.
해방 이후 친일 세력을 청산하지 못한 남한에서는 항일투사들을 쫓던 토벌대 출신들과 일제와 화합했던 인물들이 요직을 차지했다.
그리고 그들에게는 김일성 가짜설을 유포 시키는 것이 또 하나의 생존 방법이 됐던 것이다.
김일성 부대를 쳤던 간도 토벌대도 조선인이 주축으로 편성된 부대였다.
김일성 가짜설이 정권에 의해 보다 체계화된 것은 박정희 시절이다.
민주 군관학교를 나와 만주군 장교로 복무하다 해방을 맞았던 박정희는 5.16 쿠데타로 한반도 반쪽을 통치하는 최고 권좌에 올랐지만 김일성과 대비되는 과거 전력은 부담이 아닐 수 없었을 것이다.

60년대 발간된 그의 전기집에서는 한 권력자의 이런 고뇌가 읽혀진다.
그는 만주군에서의 활동을 공비를 토벌한 반공의 궤적으로 활용하고 있다.
남북이 대치해 있기는 했지만 독립운동에 투신했던 이전의 지도자들에겐 굳이 김일성의 항일 경력을 부정할 이유가 없었다.
이승만도 해방 정국에서는 김일성과 같은 추앙을 받았기 때문이다.
김일성 가짜설의 집대성판으로 평가된 이명영의 저서가 세상에 나온 것도 바로 박정희 정권 때였다.
그는 일본을 오가며 많은 증언들을 모아 김일성 가짜설을 체계화했는데 당시 그를 만났던 박갑동씨의 말에 의하면 정권의 지원이 있었음을 시사한다.
이명영의 가짜설 배후에는 박정희와 이후락 당시 중앙정보부장이 있었다는 것이다.
그러나 그는 이런 배후설을 부정했다.

7.4남북공동성명의 밀사였던 이후락,
남한의 권부는 김일성의 항일 경력을 정말 몰랐던 것일까?
89년 한 월간지가 최초로 공개한 당시 평양 밀담의 내용도 이러한 사실을 뒷받침해주고 있다.
이후락씨는 김일성의 항일 투쟁을 담은 오페라를 본 후 자신도 그가 항일 투쟁을 했던 심정으로 평양에 왔다고 했다는데, 김일성 가짜설이 횡행하던 시절 남한의 권부가 이미 그의 항일운동 사실을 알고 있었다는 증거는 또 있다.
이후락씨보다 앞서 중앙정보부장을 지냈던 김형욱은 훗날 그의 회고록에서 이렇게 술회했다.
"비록 규모가 작기는 하였으나 김일성이 상당한 조직을 가지고 있었고 보천보 전투를 지휘한 사실도 알고 있었다.
김일성이 완전 가짜가 아니고 사실은 진짜라고 교정하는데 있어서는 중앙정보부장인 나도 겁을 먹고 조심을 해야 할 만큼 한국의 반공 문화는 무서운 존재였다."
Indeed, it was contraindicated to mention Kim Il-sung's anti-Japanese struggle in our society for the last half century. Shin Dong-ah, who published an article on loans in 1978, had been suppressed by the regime because he had previously published a text containing Kim Il-sung's partisan activities. It was part of the regime's taming of the media, but eventually three people were arrested, including Hong Seung-myeong week. 실제로 지난 반세기 우리 사회에서 김일성의 항일 투쟁에 대해 언급하는 것은 금기였다.
68년 차관 관련 기사를 실었던 신동아는 그전에 김일성의 빨치산 활동이 담긴 원문을 게재한 것이 문제가 돼 정권의 탄압을 받았다.
정권의 언론 길들이기의 일환이기도 했지만 결국 홍승명 주간 등 세 명이 구속됐다.
김일성 가짜설은 냉전체제가 무너졌던 80년대 말에도 우리 사회에서 여전히 맹위를 떨쳤다.
그렇다면 김일성 가짜설이 고착화된 책임이 비단 남한의 정략적 유포에만 있었을까?
그것은 분명 아니었다.

가짜설이 확산된 데는 김일성 신격화 과정에서 항일 투쟁 경력을 지나치게 부풀려온 북한의 선전술도 큰 몫을 했다.
94년 김일성 사망 당시 쏟아져 나온 보도들은 그에 대한 평가가 얼마나 상반된 것인가를 보여준다.
