Gimhae International Music Festival to Showcase Unity Through Concerts with East Asian Musicians
In celebration of its selection as an East Asian Cultural City, Gimhae City presents a musical harmony uniting Korea, China, and Japan.
Gimhae City has announced the 17th Gimhae International Music Festival, which will be held on May 18 at the Maru Hall of Gimhae Arts and Sports Center and on May 28 at the Hanui Hall of the Gimhae West Culture Center.
Hosted by Gimhae City and Inje University, and organized by the Gimhae International Music Festival Committee and Inje Music and Art Education Center, this festival is the first international piano music festival in Korea. It annually highlights composers with significant anniversaries, offering classical performances and beautiful piano concerts to the public.
This year, in particular, the festival commemorates Gimhae's designation as an East Asian Cultural City for 2024, featuring a unifying concert with East Asian musicians.
The main concert will take place on May 18 at 5 p.m. at Maru Hall, featuring world-renowned soloists such as Chinese tenor Hui Jin, soprano Jo Sun-hyeong, pianist Roh Kyung-won, Japanese-Finnish violinist Tami Pohjola, and Filipino-Taiwanese cellist Victor Coo.
The concert will also feature conductor Seo Hee-tae, known for his portrayal of the character Kang Mae in the drama "Beethoven Virus," along with the KNN Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. The program includes opera excerpts from Puccini’s "Madama Butterfly" and "Turandot," set in Japan and China respectively, and Beethoven's Triple Concerto, all celebrating the theme of harmony.
On May 28 at 7:30 p.m., the "Waves of the East" Piano Gala Concert will be held at Hanui Hall. This concert will explore the past, present, and future of the East through a grand piano performance.
Japanese pianists Kiai Nara and Hinako Tsuruga, Chinese pianists Longxuan Wu and Yutong Zhang, and Korean artists Roh Kyung-won, Kim Sang-il, and Choi Won-seok, along with flutist Lee Joo-hyung, will showcase their dazzling techniques. An intriguing program featuring groups of three and six musicians from Korea, China, and Japan performing simultaneously on three pianos is sure to captivate the audience.
All performances are free of charge (first-come, first-served basis). Reservations can be made through the Gimhae International Music Festival website, via KakaoTalk
Hong Tae-yong, the mayor of Gimhae, stated, "We hope that the East Asian harmony concert at the 17th International Music Festival will provide many people with a sense of joy and inspiration, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy both music and culture simultaneously."
