Busan Strengthens Sister City Relations with Barcelona in Joint Declaration On May 21, at 5:15 PM (local time), the City of Busan announced the signing of a 'Joint Declaration for Strengthening Sister City Relations between Busan and Barcelona' at Barcelona City Hall. This event was attended by Park Heong-joon, Mayor of Busan, Jaume Collboni, Mayor of Barcelona, and Jordi Cases Pallarès, Secretary General of the Barcelona Local Government. This joint declaration marks a follow-up action to further strengthen the exchange and cooperation between the two cities, which have been sister cities since 1983, a relationship that has lasted over 40 years. Busan and Barcelona have collaborated in various fields, including human exchanges, port cooperation, and joint projects. Notably, in 2022, the Busan Port Authority opened a local logistics center at the Port of Barcelona, and last year, a media art exhibition themed on the works of world-renowned architect Antoni Gaudí from Barcelona was held in Busan to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the sisterhood. Mayors Park and Collboni agreed to identify and pursue specific and practical cooperation projects through this agreement. The two cities plan to focus on discovering new cooperative projects in emerging fields such as digital innovation, art, and cultural content. They also aim to promote substantial exchanges and cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Barcelona, Spain's second-largest city, is a commercial and cultural hub, growing as a comprehensive port city with both logistics and passenger functions. It is also a world-renowned tourist destination, attracting about 20 million visitors annually. Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “Since the sisterhood agreement in 1983, the two cities have maintained active exchanges in various fields such as ports, culture, tourism, and human exchanges. I hope this visit to Barcelona will be a meaningful time to newly strengthen cooperation for the future by discovering new growth engine projects together." He added, "We will continue to actively promote practical and specific exchange activities in the fields of ports, economy, tourism, culture, and sports with the City of Barcelona in the future."

On this day, the Busan Museum of Art also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Barcelona's cultural institutions, Casa Asia Cultural Foundation and Loop Media Festival Barcelona. 이번 서명식에는 박형준 부산시장과 자우마 콜보니 바르셀로나시장, 조르디 카세스 파야레스 바르셀로나 지방자치단체 사무총장이 참석했다. 이번 공동선언은 1983년 자매결연을 체결한 이래 40여 년간 이어온 두 도시 간 교류와 협력 관계를 더욱 강화하기 위한 후속 조치다.
부산과 바르셀로나는 그동안 인적 교류, 항만 협력, 공동 프로젝트 추진 등 다양한 분야에서 협력해 왔다. 특히, 2022년 부산항만공사가 바르셀로나항 현지 물류센터를 개소한 데 이어, 지난해에는 자매결연 40주년을 기념해 바르셀로나 출신 세계적인 건축가 안토니오 가우디의 작품을 콘셉트로 한 미디어아트 전시를 부산에서 개최한 바 있다. 박형준 시장과 자우마 콜보니 시장은 이번 합의를 통해 양 도시 간 구체적이고 실질적인 협력 사업을 발굴하고 추진하기로 합의했다. 두 도시는 디지털 혁신, 예술 및 문화 콘텐츠 등 신성장 분야에서 새로운 협력 사업을 발굴하는 데 중점을 둘 계획이다. 또한, 상호 관심 분야에서 실질적인 교류와 협력을 추진해 나갈 예정이다. 바르셀로나는 스페인 제2의 도시이자 상업 및 문화의 중심지로, 물류와 여객 기능을 갖춘 종합 항만 도시로 성장 중이다. 연간 약 2000만명의 관광객이 방문하는 세계적인 관광도시이기도 하다. 박형준 시장은 “두 도시는 1983년 자매결연 체결 이후 항만, 문화, 관광, 인적 교류 등 다양한 분야에서 활발한 교류를 이어왔다”라며, “이번 바르셀로나 방문을 통해 양 도시가 신성장 동력 사업을 함께 발굴하는 등 미래를 향한 협력을 새롭게 다지는 뜻깊은 시간이 되길 바란다”라고 밝혔다. 이어 “향후 바르셀로나시와 항만, 경제, 관광, 문화, 스포츠 분야에서 실질적이고 구체적인 교류 활동을 활발히 이어갈 것”이라고 덧붙였다. 이날 부산시립미술관과 바르셀로나의 문화예술기관인 카사 아시아 문화재단(Casa Asia), 루프 미디어 페스티벌 바르셀로나와 업무협약도 체결됐다.
시는 이번 업무협약을 통해 부산은 국제교류 다변화와 교류체계 구축을 통한 국제문화중심도시로서의 역량 및 위상을 강화할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
