갤러리조은은 이재현(b.1979), 타츠히토 호리코시(b.1985)의 2인전 《Being There》을 8월 29일부터 9월 28일까지 개최한다. 현실과 가상을 오가며 인물을 표현하는 두 작가는 외로운 존재로서의 인간을 특유의 화법으로 표현한다.

삶의 기억을 예술로 치환하는 이재현(b.1972)은 과거 어린 시절부터 현재까지 작가의 삶에 자리 잡고 있는 사람과 사물에 대한 기억들을 캔버스 위에 재구성한다. 물감을 두텁게 바르는 임파스토(Impasto)기법으로 거친 듯 투박하게 표현된 사람과 사물은 세월의 흔적이 느껴지는 색채감과 함께 익살스러우면서 어딘지 모르게 외로워 보인다.

생업으로 바빴던 부모님의 부재로 고독한 유년기를 보낸 작가의 ‘정서적 허기’는 작품을 통해 재현되고 치유된다. 작품 속에서 작가는 가족들과 함께 따뜻한 거실에서 화목하고 평화로운 시간을 보내고(“People In the Room”), 간절하게 가지고 싶었던 장난감들로 풍족하게 둘러싸여 있다(“Obsession”). 현재 작가의 반려견 ‘딸기’가 작품 곳곳에 존재하는데, 작가는 기억을 단순히 가슴 한 켠에 묻어두는 과거의 시간이 아닌 현재 자신의 삶과 나란히 병치해 혼재시킨다. 이에 홍경한 미술비평가는 “이재현에게 예술은 기억의 호출이자 현존재Dasein에 대한 담담한 일기”라고 평하는데, 작품을 통해 비로소 어린 시절 그리운 아버지와 어머니, 누나 그리고 현재의 내가 함께 존재한다.

13점의 신작이 공개될 본 전시에서 “The painter’s still life”와 같은 대표 시리즈와 함께 서정적 풍경이 돋보이는 어린 시절의 자화상 “1983”을 최초로 공개할 예정이다. 건축과 조각 그리고 순수 회화를 전공한 작가는 2022년 개인전을 기점으로, 2023년 파리 개인전, 갤러리조은 개인전 그리고 화이트스톤 서울 개관전을 치르며 성공적 행보를 이어 나가고 있다. 2025년 화이트스톤 서울에서 개인전을 앞두고 있다.

도쿄를 베이스로 작업 활동을 펼치고 있는 타츠히토 호리코시Tatsuhito Horikoshi (b.1985)는 유년기의 순수성, 반항정신 그리고 열려 있는 성 정체성을 특유의 섬세한 조형 언어로 표현한다. 담담한 표정의 소년과 소년들이 클래식한 초상화 포즈로 관객 앞에 등장한다. 섬세한 보색 컬러 대비와 소묘를 연상시키는 세밀한 붓질, 투명함과 불투명을 오가는 채색법이 작품에 미묘한 뉘앙스를 선사한다.  

서양화를 전공한 작가는 학교에서 배운 아카데믹하고 사실적인 기법보다는, 서브컬처로 여겨지는 애니메이션, 만화 스타일의 표현법에 예술적 근간을 둔다. 사실성이 배제된 인물들은 보는 이로 하여금 캔버스의 인물에게 더 쉽게 자신을 투영하게 만든다. 현실을 벗어나 이상적 존재가 되고 싶은 우리들의 변신 transformation 욕구와 동시에 잊어 버린 어린 시절의 호기심, 모험심, 꿈의 중요성이 환기된다.

오늘날 우리가 살고 있는 합리주의적, 성취 지향적 사회에서 인간이 가진 불확실함, 연약함이 점점 불필요한 것으로 치부된다고 생각한 작가는 의연한 소년과 소녀의 초상화를 통해 순수성에 대한 환기를 넘어 약자 그리고 외로운 소수자의 당당한 존엄성과 “온화한 인간애”를 표현한다. 본 전시를 통해 한국에서 최초로 공개되는 80호 대형 초상화부터 소품까지 다채로운 12점의 최신작을 선보일 예정이다. 일본 타마 미술대학교에서 서양화를 전공한 작가는, 2020년 홍콩 개인전, 2022년, 2023년 파리 개인전, 2024년 베이징 개인전을 치르며 전 세계에서 활발한 작품활동을 이어오고 있다. 한국에서는 2023년 KIAF Seoul에서 갤러리조은을 통해 전 작품 솔드아웃 되며 성공적인 데뷔를 치렀다. 일본 Mr. I 컬렉션, 스위스 장 피고치 컬렉션(Pigozzi Collection)에 작품이 소장되어 있으며, 올해 11월 뉴욕과(GR Gallery)과 12월 상하이(K11)에서 전시를 앞두고 있다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present the duo exhibition "Being There" by Lee Jae-Hyun (b. 1979) and Tatsuhito Horikoshi (b. 1985) from August 29 through September 28. The two artists, who portray characters in real and virtual ways, express humans as solitary beings in their unique artistic language.

Lee Jae-hyun (b. 1979), who replaces life memories with art, reconstructs memories of people and objects that were present in the artist's life from childhood to the present on canvas. Using the impasto technique, in which a thick layer of paint is applied, the people and objects appear from coarse and gloomy to humorous and lonely, with a sense of color that shows the traces of time.

The emotional hunger of the artist, who spent a lonely childhood due to the absence of his parents, who were preoccupied with life, is represented and healed through his work. In his works, the artist depicts a harmonious and peaceful time with his family in a warm living room ("People in the Room") and is surrounded by toys he desperately wanted ("Obsession"). The artist's dog, "Strawberry", is omnipresent in the works, and the artist mixes memories with his life in the present, not just expressing the past buried inside his heart. Art critic Hong Kyoung-Han said, "For Lee Jae-Hyun, art is a call to memory and a silent diary about being there," and through the work, his father, his mother, his sister, whom he missed as a child, and himself exist together.

The exhibition shows 13 works, including representative series such as "The Painter’s Still Life“ and the youth portrait "1983", which is being shown for the first time. The artist, who studied architecture, sculpture, and painting, continues his career with exhibitions in Paris (2023), at the Joeun Gallery in Seoul (2023), and at the Whitestone in Seoul (2023). His solo exhibition at the Whitestone in Seoul will take place in 2025.

Tatsuhito Horikoshi (b. 1985), who works in Tokyo, expresses the innocence, rebellious spirit, and open gender identity of youth in his unique and delicate artistic language. Boys and girls with calm facial __EXPRESSION__s appear before the audience in classic portrait poses. The delicate, complementary color contrast, the detailed brushstrokes reminiscent of a drawing, and the way the image moves between transparency and opacity add subtle nuances to the painting.

Instead of the academic and realistic techniques learned in school, the artist, who studied Western painting, lays an artistic foundation for the __EXPRESSION__ of animation and manga style, which is considered to be a subculture. Characters that defy realism make it easier for the viewer to project themselves onto the canvas. At the same time, they remind us of our desire to transform ourselves, to escape reality, and to become an ideal being. They also evoke the importance of childlike curiosity, adventure, and dreams that we have forgotten.

The artist, who believes that human insecurity and fragility are increasingly seen as unnecessary in the contemporary, rationalist, and achievement-oriented society, expresses the dignity and gentle humanity of weak and lonely minorities beyond the evocation of purity through portraits of determined boys and girls.

In this exhibition, 12 works, from large-scale to small portraits, will be shown for the first time in Korea. The artist, who studied Western painting at Tama University of Art in Japan, is active worldwide and has already had solo exhibitions in Hong Kong (2020), Paris (2022, 2023) and Beijing (2024). His debut in Korea was a complete success; in 2023, all of his works were sold out through Gallery Joeun at KIAF in Seoul. The works are in the Japanese Mr. I Collection and the Swiss Pigozzi Collection, and his works will be exhibited in New York City in November and in Shanghai in December.
